The ranking logic. Uncoated construction outranks any coating claim, because a pan with no coating has nothing to shed and nothing to take on faith. Within the uncoated picks, order reflects versatility and price, not chemical safety - chemically, an uncoated pan is an uncoated pan, and we will not invent a numeric safety ranking to separate them.

What the PFAS column means. "None - uncoated" is a construction fact. "None claimed" means the brand says so and no named third party has published a result. That distinction is the entire point of this site.

What we can't rank. Ceramic-coated brands against each other on safety: the underlying data is pass/fail leach testing or nothing at all, so any numeric ordering would be fiction.

The regulatory floor has moved: Minnesota banned cookware with intentionally added PFAS effective January 1, 2025, a federal judge refused to block the law in March 2025, and Colorado and Vermont followed on January 1, 2026, with Rhode Island (2027) and Connecticut (2028) scheduled next per BCLP's state tracker. Is ceramic nonstick cookware really PFAS-free?

Usually yes, but it is mostly taken on the brand's word: sol-gel ceramic coatings like Caraway's and GreenPan's are made without PTFE, yet few brands publish independent test reports. The Ecology Center also found that "PFOA-free" marketing on other pans can coexist with a PTFE coating, so the specific claim to look for is "no PTFE," ideally with published third-party results.

Does PFOA-free mean PFAS-free?

No. PFOA is one chemical; PTFE (Teflon) is itself a PFAS, and the Ecology Center found 79% of the nonstick cooking pans it tested were PTFE-coated, including pans labeled PFOA-free. A "PFOA-free" PTFE pan would still be barred from sale under Minnesota's Amara's Law.

Is Teflon banned in the US?
